Some like it HOT!

Is it odd that I'm sitting on the floor of my son's bedroom in the dark, blogging away? Could it be that this is the only room in the entire house that provides a safe refuge from the super colossal heat that is to consume me if I dare open the door? Do you think I'm exaggerating just a little? I really wish I were. Even a tiny bit. The truth is, I can't remember a time when I've experienced such suffocating heat. And I grew up in Coeur D' Alene, Idaho, where summers in the 90+ degrees were the norm! We would spend all day outdoors, sunbathing, sitting by the pool, swimming in the lake, walking around downtown and it was NO BIG DEAL. No one ever complained or took such drastic measures to escape the heat. I mean, have you been watching the news?? Every mall, movie theater, library, and restaurant is flooded with people from morning until night. Hotels are turning people away. My pregnant friend Dana went to five different stores to try and find an air conditioner to no avail and came home dejected after having paid $50 for a pancake-sized fan. No, this definitely feels like a different, more extreme strain of heat than I'm used to. You know it's serious business when we make the Nightly News with our record breaking highs and lows!

And how has the Lai-Alderman household been holding up under this heat wave? Not good, I'm afraid. This crazy weather has everyone on their last nerve, yours truly included. I won't even try to explain why my husband had the inclination to spend $500 on a used portable air conditioner he found on Craigslist when we have a perfectly fine window AC unit sitting in the garage, waiting patiently to be installed for the past 2 years. In fact, just writing this last sentence has my blood boiling. But...what's important in this story is, I threatened him to the point where NOT installing it is not an option if he prefers to maintain the use of his legs.

Needless to say, I can be very persuasive sometimes.

My Baby-Sitter

Everyone knows baby-sitters are hard to come by. Baby-sitters who are reliable, mature, and responsible. Baby-sitters who charge $5 an hour. Yes, you read that correctly. $5 an hour. At this point, I expect to get spammed with all sorts of hate mail. I probably shouldn't even reveal her name, much less her picture. But I wanted to give a shout-out to my girl Michelle, otherwise known as Mishy, as Big O affectionately calls her. Today is her birthday...the big 14...and we're celebrating with dinner and cake, all prepared by her awesome mom, my good friend and neighbor, Angela. We're having lemon pasta, caesar salad, and homemade chicken fingers...all her favorite things. Happy Birthday Michelle! We're so lucky to have you! xo

Slacker...who, me??!

I am a slacker. No doubt about it. Blame it on the weather. We're having the most amazing summer in Seattle that one can't be bothered with blogging! No, we're too busy filling our sunny days sitting (me) and splashing (Big O) in the pool, running through sprinklers, conducting water balloon fights, taking walks to the park, digging in sand boxes, chillin' under the umbrella (seems we can't escape the umbrella, rain or shine around here!), making fruit smoothies, blowing bubbles, depleting every drugstore in town of sunblock, dining alfresco, and spending time with our best buds!

So you see...I have a valid excuse for not being current with my blog. I apologize to all three of my loyal followers for letting you down. I'll try to be better in the future....just as soon as summer is over!

Ps. I'm working on retroactive posts that were started but never finished so if you're interested (and who wouldn't be??), scroll down for those. But I can't promise when they'll show up! :)
